Featured Upcoming Event

De Leon Springs, FL

On May 14, 2011, Sparton will be participating, for the third consecutive year, in the American Cancer Society Relay For Life® of Deland.  Relay For Life® is a life-changing event that gives everyone in communities across the globe a chance to celebrate the lives of people who have battled cancer, remember loved ones lost, and fight back against a disease that has taken too much. At Relay, teams of people camp out at a local high school, park, or fairground and take turns walking or running around a track or path. Each team is asked to have a representative on the track at all times during the 18-hour event signifying “cancer never sleeps."  The philosophy represents the hope that those lost to cancer will never be forgotten, that those who face cancer will be supported, and that one day cancer will be eliminated.  We aren’t just fighting one type of cancer – we’re fighting for every birthday threatened by every cancer in every community.

March 2011 was Sparton’s official “Kick-Off” to the 2011 Relay For Life®.  As a team, the Sparton Wave Runners are gearing up with volunteers from within our corporation to organize a planning committee, as well as fundraising activities throughout the next three months to help us meet, and hopefully surpass, our goal of $2,000.00 for the 2011 event.  This year’s event theme is “Mardi Gras,” so our team held a “Mardi Gras” Bake Sale at Sparton on Mardi Gras (March 8th).  Between all the goodies donated by our employees and a 50/50 drawing, we raised almost $500 for our team. Our plan is to also hold another bake sale at Sparton on May 5th, Cinco de Mayo.  Every penny we raise goes to the American Cancer Society.

On event day, our team sets up a booth and sells items we, as a team, decide would sell well and be profitable.  One of our employees is making ribbon pins in the different colors of cancer--pink for breast cancer, white for lung cancer, grey for brain cancer, gold for childhood cancer, etc.--for us to sell.  Another employee’s mother has volunteered to make placemats and a table runner in the breast cancer print for us to include in a drawing. Luigi’s, a local restaurant many Sparton employees frequent, is donating a gift certificate; a local hair salon is donating a basket of hair products; and a local horse enthusiast is donating an hour beach ride/lesson for one person.  Some employees also make cookies and brownies to sell that evening and donate water and Gatorade that can be sold, as well.

In 2009, our team participants totaled 23 employees. Last year, that increased to 37.  So far this year, there are already 27 employees signed up and ready to go on May 14th.  Employees can sign up all the way up until event day.

Please visit us, join our team, or make a donation.  Saving lives from cancer starts one team, one participant, and one dollar at a time. Our team is doing our part to make sure that cancer never steals another year of anyone’s life.  The impact we can make together is much greater than what any of us could do alone!
