Founded by General W. H. Withington, a man who harbored a thirst for innovative thinking and a desire to foster the interest of his two sons in the steel parts manufacturing business, Sparton opened its doors in Jackson, Michigan in 1900. Since that time, we’ve committed ourselves to seeking effective solutions to our clients’ challenges...moving their product visions forward, while staying on the cutting-edge of the electronic and electromechanical industry.
During World War I, we began our relationship with the military, producing hand grenades, helmets and aircraft engine parts. By the end of World War II, our portfolio of products increased to include radio receivers, transmitters, antenna systems, radars, and radio compasses.
After 1945, Sparton engineers began a program using the company's radio expertise to develop a sonobuoy system for the U.S. Navy. Since our first contract in 1951, Sparton has delivered more than six million sonobuoys to the U.S. and Allied Navies worldwide.
During the next few decades, we moved into the production of precision instruments for aerospace, as well as providing oil and gas exploration in the U.S. and Australia. We then began manufacturing new monitoring and communication systems for border and perimeter security. In 2005, we entered the medical business segment by opening a medical manufacturing plant at our DeLeon Springs, Florida facility. We further expanded our capabilities in 2010 with the acquisition of Delphi Medical Systems of Denver, Colorado.
Today, we are one of the largest broad-based providers of sophisticated electronic and electromechanical products through prime contracts, instrumentation, defense and security, and printed circuit board electronics.
