Sparton Corporation Announces the Election of Dr. Richard J. Johns to the Board of Directors
(JACKSON, MICHIGAN)-October 31, 2002-Electronic Contract Manufacturing Service (EMS) provider Sparton Corporation (NYSE:SPA) is pleased to announce Dr. Richard J. Johns has been elected to the Sparton Board of Directors.
As a distinguished medical practitioner and professor, Dr. Johns’ appointment was the result of Sparton Corporation’s efforts to focus business development resources in the areas of medical design and manufacturing. Dr. Johns will bring an unprecedented level of medical and scientific expertise to the Sparton Board of Directors, particularly in the field of biomedical engineering.
Dr. Johns received his B.S. degree in Physics from the University of Oregon and his M.D. degree from Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. Following his residency training at Johns Hopkins and service in the U.S. Army Medical Corps, Dr. Johns joined the faculty in the Department of Medicine. He rose through the ranks to become Professor of Medicine in 1966.
In 1991, Dr. Johns was appointed University Distinguished Service Professor, Department of Biomedical Engineering, Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. Prior to that Dr. Johns was the Massey Professor and Director of the Department of Biomedical Engineering at Johns Hopkins for 21 years. Dr. Johns is also a Professor of Medicine in the School of Medicine and a Physician on the active staff of the Johns Hopkins Hospital.
He is also a member of the American Society for Clinical Investigation and the Association of American Physicians. He has been President of the Group on Engineering in Medicine and Biology of the IEEE, of the Biomedical Engineering Society , and of the Interurban Clinical Club. He was Chairman of the Section of Medical Sciences of the American Association for the Advancement of Science.
Dr. Johns is a member of the Institute of Medicine of the National Academy of Sciences and has served on its Council. He has received the IEEE Centennial Medal as well as their Career Achievement Award. He is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Medicine and is a Founding Fellow of the American Institute for Biological and Medical Engineering.
In 1994 Dr. Johns received the Distinguished Alumnus Award from the Johns Hopkins University and the Distinguished Medical Alumnus Award in 1997.
Dr. Johns has been Chairman of the Advisory Committee for the Harvard-MIT Division of Health Sciences and Technology and was a member of the Board of Visitors of Duke University School of Engineering. He has been a member of the Science Advisory Committee and the Governing Committee of the Whitaker Foundation, a member of the General Motors Science Advisory Committee and has served on advisory groups of the National Institutes of Health.
Dr. Johns has published over 130 scientific articles, was an editor of seven editions of the textbook, “The Principles and Practice of Medicine," and holds three patents.
